There is fatal and non-fatal violence in the workplace. When discussing workplace violence, there are many
issues that are to be addressed. The workplace can be various settings such as offices, factories, refineries,
convenience stores, fast food restaurant, hospitals, taxicabs and grocery stores. Violence is a substantial
contributor to occupational injury and death. Homicide has become the second leading form of violence or also
what is known as occupational injury death.
Violence in the workplace is a growing Human Resource concern for all organizations today. There is an
increasing magnitude of the problem, which indicates that appropriate systems need to be developed in order to
combat the negative effects that are developed due to the increase and prevalence of the problem.
The workplace has become a battleground for violence in society. A workplace violence program should include
a system for documenting incidents and open communication between employers and employees. There are
many prevention strategies for minimizing the risk of violence in the workplace and are not limited to
cash-handling policies, physical separation of workers from customers, good lighting, security devices, escort
services and employee training.
